Rice: Rich in Varieties for Everyone
Rice is the dominant staple food along with wheat in India. Different kinds of rice are produced and all of them have different nutritional value, contents and different uses. Rice goes along with various other meals like dals, vegetables which makes a perfect combo and who can forget its significance in different biryanis. India is a heaven for biryani lovers where different cuisines of biryani are available. Rice is a great source of carbohydrates which is needed to get going throughout the day as it provides energy. Rice is a grain whose demand is evergreen and not seasonal but rather throughout the year. The export of rice is on a constant basis. As per statistics, India exported $4.33B worth of basmati rice and $2.01B worth of non-basmati rice.
The different types of rice being exported from and within India are as follows:-
Basmati rice - This is the most popular variety of rice. It is long, slender and gives out aromatic essence when cooked. It is mainly used in pulao, biryani, kheer etc. This type of rice brings about flavor's with which its being served. The major producers of basmati rice are Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Himachal Pradesh and western parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Non - basmati rice - These are the rice other then basmati rice. Similarly, its characteristics are different then basmati like non-basmati rice are short and thick. Unlike basmati rice, these type of rice’s contribution in the rice production is no where near to that of basmati. Non-basmati rice are grown in various parts of Gujrat, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
Sella basmati - Sella basmati is one of the most nutrition rich type of basmati as it undergoes minimum process of polishing thus maintaining most of its nutrients. This basmati is also long and thin in nature but is slightly brown then the original basmati rice. Its basically produced in all the states where basmati is grown like Punjab, Haryana, J&K and Uttar Pradesh but just that the rice paddy is steamed and dried which results in the brownish colour of the rice.
Ponni rice - Ponni rice originates from Tamil Nadu where it is widely cultivated. Its name is directly derived from the river Kaveri and its other name is Ponni. Ponni rice is cultivated along the banks of Kaveri river. These are short and thick in nature. This rice is exported to all over India from its production and also to countries like Australia, northern parts of United States and Europe.
Broken rice - Broken rise is nothing but just varieties of rice which are broken into half during the milling process. It has the same nutrient content as other varieties of rice but just in smaller pieces. The broken rice advantage over unbroken rice is that they tend to cook easier, absorb flavours more easily and require less time & fuel to cook. Many consumers have a perception that these are defective and faulty, but actually they are not.
